Summer weight loss tips

Why Weight Loss Stalls in the Summer

June 29, 2026/in Nutrition, Wellness/by Chardonée Donald, MS, CBHS, CHN, CNS, LDN

It’s swimsuit season, again! Many people expect to lose weight during the summer because they’re more active and spending more time outdoors. Yet summer often brings unique challenges that can quietly derail progress.

Although, it is advised and great to stay active there are some things that can stall your progress.

If the scale isn’t moving, here are four common reasons why.

1. Hidden Sugars in Summer Drinks

Many popular summer beverages contain more sugar than people realize. Common culprits include:

  • Sweet tea
  • Lemonade
  • Smoothies
  • Sports drinks
  • Specialty coffee drinks
  • Cocktails and mixers

These beverages can spike blood sugar, increase cravings, and contribute to excess calorie intake without providing lasting fullness.

Try this: Choose water with cucumber and lemon/lime, sparkling water with fruit, or unsweetened iced tea most of the time.

2. Vacation Eating Habits

Vacations often mean less structure and more opportunities to indulge. Enjoy a mindful vacation. Common patterns include:

  • Larger portions
  • Frequent snacking
  • Restaurant meals
  • Desserts and treats
Try this: The goal isn’t perfection, it’s balance. Enjoy special foods while continuing to prioritize protein, vegetables, and hydration.

3. Poor Sleep

Later nights, travel, and busy social calendars can disrupt sleep. Even a few nights of poor sleep can:

  • Increase hunger
  • Trigger cravings
  • Raise stress hormones
  • Affect blood sugar balance
Try this: Quality sleep is one of the most overlooked factors in weight management. Be careful not to snack late at night.

4. Alcohol and Metabolism

Summer gatherings often come with increased alcohol consumption. Alcohol can:

  • Slow fat burning
  • Increase appetite
  • Disrupt sleep
  • Add significant calories
Try this: Being mindful of frequency and quantity can make a noticeable difference. Be sure to replenish electrolytes afterwards!

The Functional Nutrition Takeaway

Weight loss is about more than just calories. Blood sugar balance, sleep quality, hydration, and lifestyle habits all influence metabolism.

This summer, focus on the basics:

Stay hydrated — keep electrolytes on hand.
Prioritize protein — lean meats and greens
Get quality sleep — 7-8 hours per night
Limit sugary beverages — Opt for drinks naturally sweetened with fruit.
Be mindful of alcohol intake — limit yourself and hydrate after.
KEEP MOVING! — Make sure to stay active!

Small, consistent habits often make the biggest difference.

If your weight loss has stalled this summer, take a closer look at your daily habits. A few simple adjustments can help support your metabolism while still allowing you to enjoy the season.
