About Dr. Mitch

Dr. Mitch is qualified and experienced in dealing with chronic pain, whether it is mechanical (i.e., sports injury), chronic illness (i.e., rheumatoid arthritis), or wear and tear (i.e., osteoarthritis). The combination of treatment modalities brings more lasting relief to the patient, ensuring they are entirely in control while offering optimum treatment.

Integrative pain management is an approach to treating pain that combines conventional medical treatments with complementary and alternative therapies. The goal is to address the physical aspects of pain and the psychological, social, and emotional components. This holistic approach aims to improve overall well-being and functioning in individuals experiencing pain. Here are some critical elements of integrative pain management:

Conventional Medical Treatments:

  • Medications: Pain relievers, anti-inflammatory drugs, and other pharmaceutical interventions.
  • Physical therapy: Exercise, stretching, and other physical modalities to improve strength and flexibility.
  • Injections: Procedures like corticosteroid injections or nerve blocks target specific sources of pain.

Complementary and Alternative Therapies:

  • Acupuncture: Involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to stimulate energy flow and promote pain relief.
  • Osteopathic Care: Focuses on the musculoskeletal system, particularly the spine, to alleviate pain and improve function.
  • Mind-Body Techniques: Practices such as meditation, mindfulness, and relaxation techniques to manage stress and enhance coping mechanisms.
  • Yoga and Tai Chi: Incorporate gentle movements, postures, and breathing exercises to improve flexibility, balance, and overall well-being.

Psychological Support:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Helps individuals identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors associated with pain.
  • Biofeedback: Teaches individuals to control physiological processes (such as muscle tension) to reduce pain.
  • Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR): Integrates mindfulness meditation and yoga to enhance awareness and reduce stress.

Nutritional and Lifestyle Interventions:

  • Dietary Changes: Certain foods and nutritional supplements may be anti-inflammatory and contribute to pain management.
  • Exercise and Physical Activity: Tailored programs to improve overall fitness and reduce pain.

Patient Education and Empowerment:

  • Education about pain, its causes, and various treatment options empowers individuals to actively participate in their care.

Collaborative Care:

  • A team-based approach involving various healthcare professionals, such as physicians, physical therapists, psychologists, and alternative medicine practitioners, to provide comprehensive care.

Integrative pain management recognizes that individuals may respond differently to treatments and emphasizes a personalized, patient-centered approach. It often involves a collaborative effort between healthcare providers and patients to address the multidimensional nature of pain and improve the overall quality of life.

At Kaplan, we strive to provide pain management that integrates medical care and complementary therapies to help our patients regain quality of life, achieve wellness, and shape their future health.

Five Conditions Dr. Mitch Is an Expert at Treating

1. Musculoskeletal Dysfunction

From back and neck pain to ankle sprain and muscle strain, osteopathy is Dr. Mitch’s favorite tool to address pain and disability. Although manual treatment is essential to assess and treat stiffness, aches, and various injuries or degeneration, Dr. Mitch also uses injection therapy (soft tissues, joints, mesotherapy, prolotherapy) to reduce pain and increase function. Prescriptions of appropriate medications, referral to physical therapy, and surgery can help the patient get back onto a healthy, productive path.  Imaging plays an increasing part in diagnosing and managing pain and dysfunction, and patients may expect to be referred for X-rays, MRIs, ultrasounds, etc. Sometimes, “interventional radiology” can provide a very efficient way to reduce pain. Dr. Mitch takes the appropriate steps to ensure that safety is paramount and that treatment generates relief

2. Fatigue

There are many parameters to check for when it comes to fatigue, such as thyroid, anemia, depression, etc. Dr Mitch uses his medical skills to diagnose the ailment’s source and offers different treatment methods to help his patients.  From correcting a blood disorder to managing a low thyroid or abnormal electrolytes, there are as many ways to treat fatigue as there are various causes. Fatigue can hide a serious ailment. It is essential to discuss the details with a health professional, whether this is a sleep disorder or another medical condition showing up as lack of energy, lethargy, or the fundamental inability to perform activities of daily living.

3. Depression and Anxiety

The statistics prove, unfortunately, that more and more individuals feel affected by one or the other or, more likely, by both. It is essential to address the core of the disorders and find out why such feelings are controlling one’s life in such a detrimental fashion. The poor quality of life that both depression and anxiety generate is debilitating and sometimes can be dramatic and lead to fatal outcomes. Dr Mitch first uses a solid medical screening and then offers different therapies depending on the patient’s symptoms, gravity, and treatment choice. It is crucial, though, that a proper evaluation takes place. A referral to psychiatry or counseling with medications or supplementation (intravenous, herbal, nutrition) may provide the best support to promptly address the symptoms and find the source of the problem.  For those severely affected, a visit to the Urgent Care or the emergency room may be the salvation they truly need, so action is taken immediately.

4. Gastrointestinal Symptoms

Many patients visit their doctors for common ailments such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, or diarrhea. When the symptoms do not stop and persist for a while, investigations must occur. Whether it is in the form of endoscopies, stool exams, or specialized lab testing, the physician has to discover where the pain and the disability that ensues from GI dysfunction come from. Many disorders follow a GI ailment due to poor or reduced absorption that needs attention. Sometimes, a trip abroad, a summer swim in a lake, a condition that has not been uncovered, or an inappropriate diet must be discussed, analyzed, and treated. Functional medicine gives us further testing to diagnose and treat and uses various medicines, supplements, and dietary counseling.

5. Wellness

Wellness encompasses all the specialties and subspecialties of medicine. It has integrated many therapies and modalities, such as yoga, nutrition, exercise, and meditation. To feel well is to feel optimum health to prevent illness. Dr. Mitch practices the tradition of physical medicine, general practice, and exercise. Therefore, his patients are treated using many treatments and a conversation on nutrition and exercise. Integrative medicine (which combines various styles of treatment) aims to reach wellness goals.

Wellness is a personal state, different from one person to another. Therefore, the physician must be able to provide treatment and guidance to a wide variety of individuals with different aspirations.

Wellness is the ultimate goal, and Dr. Mitch uses his 30 years of experience and multiple skills to provide the best management to all of his patients.

Insurance Participation

At the Kaplan Center for Integrative Medicine, we have chosen to work outside of commercial insurance plans. By doing so, we have realigned our priorities with yours: returning you to optimal health.

Please note: If your insurance policy has out-of-network benefits a portion of our charges may be covered. Before your first visit, talk to your insurance company about your out-of-network benefits and what they include, as every plan is different.

To help our patients file accurate claims for reimbursement, we provide detailed billing forms containing all of the appropriate codes to submit to your insurance plan. For those who would like us to submit the claims on their behalf, we are happy to do so for an additional charge. Some of our practitioners are “Non-Participating providers” with Medicare, but Dr. Kaplan, Dr. Lilienfield, and Dr. Wills have “Opted-out” of Medicare. We are not accepting Medicare Advantage patients.
